Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are designated regions where human activities are restricted to conserve marine biodiversity and ecosystem services. As of 2025, approximately 8 percent of the world's oceans fall within MPAs, though only 3 percent are fully protected from extractive activities. Research demonstrates that well-managed MPAs can increase fish biomass by 400-600 percent within their boundaries, with spillover benefits to adjacent fishing grounds.
