The epipelagic zone, also known as the sunlit zone, extends from the surface down to approximately 200 meters. This is where photosynthesis occurs, supporting the vast majority of marine life. Phytoplankton thrive here, forming the base of the oceanic food web. Schools of fish, sea turtles, dolphins, and sharks all call this zone home. The warm, light-filled waters create an environment teeming with biodiversity and energy. Scientists estimate that this zone alone hosts more living biomass than all other ocean zones combined.
